Pattern Instructions

Round 1: Creating the Center

Step 1: Starting with the brown yarn, create a dmc because this technique creates a secure foundation for the coaster.

Step 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), work 16 dc into the dmc to form the base of the sunflower’s center. Count them to avoid mistakes.

Step 3: Pull the tail to tighten and secure the ring.

Round 2: Finishing the Center

Step 1: Ch 2 starts the new round.

Step 2:  work a 3dc-ps in the first st, ch 2, *3dc-ps in the next st, ch 2*; repeat from * to * around. You should have 16 3dc-ps and 16 ch 2 spaces.

Step 3: Sl st into the top of the first 3dc-ps.

Step 4: Cut and fasten off the brown yarn and weave in the ends as you go to reduce cleanup later.

Round 3: Forming the Petals

Step 1: Attach the yellow yarn by making a standing tr in any ch 2 space from the previous round.

Step 2: work *4tr-ps into the ch 2 space, ch 2, skip the 3dc-ps st from the previous round*; repeat from * to * around.

Step 3: You should have 16 4tr-ps and 16 ch 2 spaces.

Step 4: Sl st into the top of the first 4tr-ps to close the round.

Round 4: Creating the Petal Tops and Picots

Step 1: Sl st into the next ch 2 to begin the final round.

Step 2: Follow the sequence: work (ch 1, 2 dc, tr, p, 2 dc, ch 1, sl st) all in the ch 2 space to finish the petal.

Step 3: Sl st into the next ch 2 space and repeat the sequence in Step 2.

Step 4: Once you reach the last petal, sl st into the beginning chain of the round.

Step 5:  Fasten off the yarn and weave in all ends securely.
