Let’s Get to Know Crystal Doedtman of Bag-O-Day: Yarn Crafter Spotlight
If you’re new to crocheting, this blog can be the best starting point for you to get to know one of the most recognizable personalities in the yarn industry. If you’re a seasoned crafter, please do read because I have a little surprise at the end of this blog.
If there’s a name or brand that echoes in the yarn and crochet community, that would be Crystal Doedtman of Bag-O-Day (BoD) Crochet.
First off, I am honored to be featuring her in this blog because she has been an avid supporter of Rena’s Thread and Crafts, as she is with other yarn crafters, beginners or seasoned ones. People who have been following her journey and her Youtube channel can attest to how helpful she is to the community. She’s generous in sharing her ideas, enthusiastic in her tips, and kind in her teachings.
One thing about Crystal is that she loves yarn, not just crochet. She recalled in her interview with our fellow yarn crafter, Yarn Geek, that her journey with yarn and crochet started at the tender age of ten. She would visit a lady neighbor every day until she became her protégé, painstakingly studying the countless stitches and their multiples because she didn’t want to upset her mentor. The discipline was so rigid that Crystal became so adept in crochet, allowing her to make her own patterns right off the bat because of the combination of stitches she’s learned over the years.
Another thing about her is that she doesn’t care about competition. She admits she’s a communal person and that she believes that everyone can take part in the yarn party. That’s why people can feel her genuine care about the craft and the people who try to learn it. She believes that the last thing that we want to do is treat each other as competitors because we can’t grow with that mindset. And it’s a refreshing take, especially in the age where everyone wants to be seen or heard.
And speaking of being seen, Crystal also believes that being authentic is the way to go. People sense when a person’s trying to be someone they’re not. And they also definitely sense when what you’re doing is just self-service, rather than giving value to others. In her channel, she’s being herself, carrying the mission she’s been holding on to since 2014, when she started her yarn vlogging journey. She didn’t have any other goal but to teach crochet and talk about yarn. That goal is still the same to this day. She still uses the same video editing app, candidly admitting that she doesn't do any fancy way just to get and keep people engaged. It’s her authentic energy that attracts the right tribe. She has become a source of comfort and inspiration for so many.
That’s the beauty of having a pure heart in the crafty world. It bridges the gap in the community and makes everyone feel at home and safe. That’s what we also aim here at Rena’s Thread and Crafts. We want everyone to have a sense of belongingness and feel the love and care not only for the craft, but also for every artist from any skill level. That’s why we are featuring Crystal to honor her heart and spread some more good and yarny vibes in our creative circle.
