Easy Crochet Top Idea: How to Freehand a Wearable Top

If you’ve been dreaming of crocheting your simple garments but feel intimidated by complex shaping, you are in the right place. This easy crochet top is built entirely from simple shapes and basic stitches. No complicated math, no stressful sewing—just a relaxing, beginner-friendly project that you can get fresh off the hook on a weekend.
Sometimes, a simple and easy stitch can make a great wearable item. You don't need to complicate the art of crochet. And having a pattern is not always a requirement to create a beautiful piece.
The Method
If you know basic stitches, then you can do a freehand or freestyle. Here is Rena's easy crochet top idea for a wearable top:
- Measure chest.
- Chain with 1–2 inches allowance, depending on whether you want a loose shirt, then join the chain from the starting ch.

DC all in a chain around and join them together.
- Ch 2 (not counted as a stitch), front post dc all around, and join them together.
- Ch 2, back post dc all around and join.
- Repeat the process, depending on how long you want the ribbing.
- For the body, you can choose any stitches you want (double crochet, or hdc, etc.). Rena used an extended single crochet for this top.
- For the finishing part, go back to ribbing and add the straps.
